Ten Army Soldiers Killed, 11 Injured in Tragic Road Accident in Jammu and Kashmir

In a heartbreaking incident, ten Indian Army soldiers lost their lives and eleven others were injured on Thursday around noon after a military vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district. The accident occurred near Khanni Top, a dangerous high-altitude stretch along the Bhaderwah–Chamba road, officials confirmed .

The soldiers were travelling in an armoured vehicle as part of routine troop movement towards a forward area when the tragedy struck. Initial reports suggest the vehicle skidded off the narrow mountain road and fell nearly 200 feet into a gorge, leaving it severely damaged.

What Happened

According to Army sources, the accident took place shortly before noon when the vehicle lost balance while navigating a sharp curve. The road at Khanni Top is known for its steep drops, tight bends, and unpredictable weather conditions.

At the time of the accident, around 21 soldiers were onboard. Rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after the crash was reported. Four soldiers were declared dead at the scene, while the remaining injured personnel were evacuated with the help of Army units and local authorities. Tragically, six soldiers later succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to ten .

Rescue and Medical Response

The rescue operation was challenging due to the rugged terrain and the depth of the gorge. Army personnel, police teams, and local volunteers worked together to retrieve the injured.

Most of the wounded soldiers were airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for advanced treatment, while one injured soldier was admitted to a local hospital in Bhaderwah. Doctors said several of the injured remain under close observation, though their condition is reported to be stable .

Official Reactions

The tragedy drew condolences from across the country. Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of soldiers and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured personnel.

Senior Army officials described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and assured that all possible assistance is being extended to the families of the deceased. An official inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Possible Causes

While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary assessments point to difficult terrain and road conditions as major contributing factors. The Khanni Top area lies at a high altitude and often experiences fog, frost, and slippery surfaces, especially during winter months.

Heavy military vehicles operating on narrow mountain roads face additional risks due to limited maneuvering space and sharp gradients. Officials have not ruled out mechanical factors and said all aspects will be examined as part of the inquiry .

A Reminder of the Risks Beyond Combat

This tragic incident highlights the dangers Indian Army personnel face even outside active combat zones. Troop movements in mountainous regions like Doda involve constant exposure to natural hazards such as landslides, poor road infrastructure, and extreme weather.

Over the years, several similar accidents have occurred in high-altitude regions of Jammu and Kashmir, underlining the need for enhanced safety measures, improved road conditions, and strict movement protocols for heavy vehicles.

Nation Mourns the Loss

As news of the accident spread, messages of grief and solidarity poured in from citizens, veterans, and political leaders. The Indian Army has initiated support and assistance for the families of the fallen soldiers, including counseling and welfare measures.

The loss of ten lives in a single accident is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers every day, not just in battle but also while performing routine duties in some of the most challenging terrains in the country.

The nation mourns the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and hopes for the swift recovery of those injured.
