Theatrical and OTT Release
Not a lot of people know this, but before this movie got released right here in India back on August 23, 2024, there was already its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2024. And sure enough, as you expect, after the successful run in theatres, this movie came on Amazon Prime Video starting September 27, 2024.
Cast and Characters
If you want to hype yourself or your friends about this movie, just let them know about the cast, like, the lead roles are played by Soori as Paandi and Anna Ben as Meena. Those are just the main roles you’ll see most of the time on screen, but other key characters include Jawahar Sakthi as Kumar, Poobalam Pragatheeswaran as Paandi’s father, Sai Abinaya as Rani (Paandi’s sister), and Mullaiyarasi as the girl treated by the seer. P.S. Vinothraj isn’t just the director of this film, nah, he is also the one who wrote the story. Other than that, just know for now that this film is produced by Sivakarthikeyan and Kalai Arasu under SK Productions and The Little Wave Productions. Storyline Summary
In the first few scenes of the movie, it seems like a typical rom-com movie, but later on, the plot twists when the casteism factor gets involved, and that’s because Meena is actually an upper-caste girl who falls in love with a man from a lower caste. And because of that, her family, thinking she’s under a spell, sends her uncle Paandi to take her to a seer. It is actually the road journey that is the best bit about the story, and that is where everything unfolds before us.
Budget and Box Office
Looking at how well this movie is made, no doubt, you’d think that KOTTukkaali is a high-budget movie, but it was made with an estimated budget of only ₹10 Crore. It earned around ₹1.5 Crore at the Indian box office. Even though it didn’t perform well commercially, it later picked up a cult following after its digital release.
